A chimney cap is the first thing Atlantic Ocean air touches on your chimney, which means in Delray Beach it takes more abuse than almost any other component. East of the Intracoastal — out along the barrier island streets and the canal-front lots of Tropic Isle — we find caps that have surface-rusted through in as few as three or four years when they were installed with a standard galvanized steel product. Salt air does not forgive cheap metal, and a failed cap is an open door for rain, debris, and nesting birds.

What Our Chimney Caps Service Includes

A cap fitted to your actual flue size so it seals and stays put in Florida wind.

Rain & Moisture Block

Keeps direct rain out of the flue — a leading cause of interior chimney damage.

Animal & Debris Screen

Mesh keeps birds, squirrels, and leaves from getting in and blocking the flue.

Durable, Secure Fit

Quality caps installed to handle wind-driven rain and storm season.

Why Delray Beach Homes Need Chimney Caps

The symptoms of a failing cap show up in predictable patterns here. Rust streaks running down the chimney stack are the most visible sign. Inside, a cap that's rusted loose or blown off during a storm leaves the flue exposed to wind-driven rain, which Palm Beach County delivers in abundance from June through November. We also see caps that are the wrong size for the flue tile, creating a gap that lets rain in from the side even though the cap technically covers the opening from above.

We replace and install caps using stainless steel or copper for homes anywhere near the coast, and we size them to the actual dimensions of your flue — not the nearest standard size. A properly fitted cap sits over the flue tile with enough overhang to deflect wind-driven rain, and it's fastened to the crown rather than just resting under gravity. For homes with multiple flues we look at whether a multi-flue cap makes sense or whether individual caps are the better call based on flue spacing and roof pitch.

If your current cap has rusted or shifted, the repair is straightforward and far cheaper than dealing with the water damage that comes from leaving the flue uncovered through a South Florida summer. Homeowners near the water should plan to check their cap every couple of years regardless — it's a small item with an outsized impact on everything below it.

Signs You Need Chimney Caps

  • You can see the cap is missing, rusted through, bent, or crushed
  • Birds, squirrels, or the sound of animals in the chimney
  • Leaves and debris collecting inside the flue or firebox
  • Rain coming straight down the flue or moisture in the firebox after storms

Chimney Caps in Delray Beach — Common Questions

Do I really need a chimney cap?

It's one of the best-value parts on the whole chimney. Without a cap, rain goes straight down the flue, animals nest inside, and debris blocks airflow. A proper cap prevents all three for a relatively small cost.

My cap looks fine — why is water still getting in?

A cap covers the flue opening, but water can also enter through a cracked crown, failed flashing, or porous masonry. If you have a leak, we'll check whether the cap is the issue or whether it's coming from somewhere else.

Can you match a cap to an unusual flue?

Yes. We size and fit caps to your specific flue, including odd shapes and multiple flues, so it seals correctly rather than just sitting loosely on top.

Why do chimneys in Delray Beach seem to corrode faster than elsewhere?

It comes down to salt air. Delray Beach sits right on the Atlantic, and homes east of the Intracoastal especially are exposed to a constant salt-laden breeze. Salt is hard on metal, so chimney caps, flashing, dampers, and fasteners that might last for decades inland can show rust and pitting much sooner here. The closer you are to the beach, the faster it happens. We use materials suited to that marine environment and recommend periodic inspections so we can replace a corroding cap or flashing before it lets water in.

What are the code requirements for a chimney cap or spark arrestor screen?

Screen openings shall not permit the passage of spheres having a diameter greater than 1/2 inch, nor block the passage of spheres having a diameter less than 3/8 inch. Under IRC section R1003.9.2, the net free area of the arrestor must also be not less than four times the net free area of the chimney flue outlet it serves, and the screen must have heat and corrosion resistance equivalent to 19-gage galvanized steel or 24-gage stainless steel. The arrestor must be accessible for cleaning, and the screen or cap must be removable so the flue can be swept. A screen finer than 3/8 inch is not code-compliant because it clogs with soot and chokes the draft. Source: International Residential Code section R1003.9.2, Spark arrestors

Does Florida require a carbon monoxide alarm if the house has a fireplace?

Yes for new construction. Florida Statute 553.885 requires that every separate building or addition constructed on or after July 1, 2008 that has a fossil-fuel-burning heater or appliance, a fireplace, an attached garage or any other feature that emits carbon monoxide as a byproduct of combustion must have an approved operational carbon monoxide alarm installed within 10 feet of each room used for sleeping purposes, or at other locations required by the Florida Building Code. The requirement can be met with a hard-wired or battery-powered CO alarm or a combination CO and smoke alarm. The statute applies to new buildings and additions, not to existing buildings undergoing ordinary alterations or repairs. Source: Florida Statutes section 553.885, Carbon monoxide alarm required

How much does chimney cap installation cost in Delray Beach?

Most Florida homeowners pay $150–$500 for a chimney cap installed, depending on material, flue size, and roof accessibility. What a specific Delray Beach job costs comes down to chimney height, roof access and pitch, and the condition of the crown and flashing, so we give a free on-site estimate with upfront pricing before any work begins.
