What dryer vent cleaning is, and what it is not
Dryer vent cleaning is the removal of lint from the whole exhaust path that carries hot, wet air from your dryer to the outside: the flexible transition duct behind the appliance, the concealed rigid duct inside the wall or slab, and the hood or roof cap. It is not emptying the lint screen, and it is not dryer repair.
A proper visit is a cleaning and an inspection together. The duct gets brushed and vacuumed along its full length, the termination and its backdraft damper get cleared and checked for movement, and airflow is confirmed at the outside hood with the dryer running. What you get back is a duct that is clear and a plain description of anything found that is wrong with the installation itself.
What it is not: it is not a fix for a failed heating element, thermostat, thermal fuse, motor or moisture sensor. Those are appliance faults, and a clean vent will not cure them. If the duct itself is crushed, punctured, undersized, made of the wrong material or routed somewhere it should not be, replacing or re-routing it is separate work and is quoted separately.
Can a clogged dryer vent cause a fire?
Yes. Failure to clean is the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires. NFPA found that one-third of dryer fires start that way, and 27 percent begin when dust, fiber or lint ignites. Keeping the duct clear removes the most common ignition path a homeowner controls.
The National Fire Protection Association's dryer analysis found that US fire departments responded to an estimated average of 13,820 home structure fires per year in which clothes dryers were involved in the ignition, over 2014 to 2018. Those fires caused an average of seven civilian deaths, 344 civilian injuries and $233 million in direct property damage each year.
In the same analysis, one-third of dryer fires (32 percent) were caused by a failure to clean, and 27 percent started when dust, fiber or lint ignited. The U.S. Fire Administration reaches the same conclusion from a different dataset, reporting failure to clean as the leading factor contributing to the ignition of clothes dryer fires in homes from 2018 to 2020, at 31 percent. The two agencies use different data sources, so their fire counts are not directly comparable. What they agree on is the cause.
Keep the risk in proportion. NFPA puts dryers at about 4 percent of home structure fires. This is not the leading cause of house fires. It is a common and easily removed one, which is a different and more useful thing.

Signs your dryer vent needs cleaning
The signs are clothes still damp after a full cycle, a dryer cabinet that is hot to the touch, a burning or musty smell, an outdoor flap that barely opens, and lint collecting around the hood. Drying time is the most reliable of them, because a restricted duct stalls evaporation long before anything else shows.
Every symptom below has an innocent explanation as well, so read both columns before you assume the vent is the problem.

Before you call anyone, run the checks the manufacturers and federal agencies publish. They will often tell you whether the problem is the vent or the appliance.
- Clean the lint screen, then scrub the mesh. ENERGY STAR recommends a toothbrush once a month if you use dryer sheets, because the sheets leave a film that reduces airflow through a screen that looks empty. USFA advises a nylon brush at least every six months.
- Start a load and go outside. Is there strong airflow at the hood, and does the flap open fully? CPSC and USFA both name this as the homeowner's own test.
- Pull the dryer out and look at the transition duct for kinks, crushing, tape repairs and excess length.
- Electric dryers only: disconnect the duct and run a load or two. If the symptoms disappear, the problem is the venting. If they persist, it is the appliance. Reconnect it before normal use. This one is our own advice rather than a published test.
- Never run a gas dryer with the vent disconnected.

How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?
At least once a year. NFPA, the U.S. Fire Administration, CSIA, NADCA, GE and LG all land on an annual interval; Samsung says once or twice a year; Whirlpool and Maytag say every one to two years. All of them add the same override: sooner if clothes are taking longer than normal to dry.
No organization publishes an interval based on household size, pet ownership or load count. Here is who says what, and what kind of body is saying it.

Two things worth being clear about. NFPA's annual figure comes from a consumer tip sheet: the model codes set installation requirements for dryer ducts, not a cleaning interval. And CSIA specifies an annual inspection rather than a cleaning, which means a year in which the duct is found clear is a legitimate outcome, not a wasted visit.
What genuinely shortens the interval is the run itself, not the household. Whirlpool's own venting specification puts it plainly: the frequency of inspections varies depending on the system and the usage of the dryer, an annual inspection is recommended for single-family use, and complaints of long drying times or a hot dryer top indicate the need to inspect the exhaust system (Whirlpool, Dryer Venting Specifications, PDF). A long, bendy or roof-terminated run accumulates faster than a short punch through an exterior wall. That is a duct fact, not a demographic one.
Does cleaning the lint trap clean the dryer vent?
No. The trap catches most lint but not all of it; the rest is carried into the duct with the moist exhaust air and settles there, out of sight. The U.S. Fire Administration documents both halves of that, and every manufacturer lists trap cleaning and vent cleaning as two separate tasks.
The USFA states it directly: while much of the lint is trapped by the dryer's filter, lint is also carried through the vent system along with moist air, and accumulated lint reduces airflow and can pose a fire hazard. The same report explains where it settles. If a dryer vent is too long or has many bends and turns, moisture in the warm air passing through it condenses on the vent surfaces, attracting lint, and eventually the lint accumulates and creates resistance.
Fire-origin data points the same way. In a CPSC review of in-depth dryer fire investigations, the duct or venting system was the most frequently reported point of origin at 14 incidents, with the lint trap second at 10. Among the 29 cases where the household's habits were recorded, 14 reported cleaning the lint trap regularly. Regular trap cleaning had not prevented those fires.
CPSC also ran dryers with lint deliberately packed into the vent. Internal temperatures rose above normal, the clothes did not come out dry, and the agency's conclusion is the sentence that explains this entire problem: the dryer continues to function with no warning to the user other than ineffective drying of the clothes, while its electrical components become thermally stressed. You do not get an alarm. You get slow laundry.

What happens during a dryer vent cleaning
A dryer vent cleaning is a full-length job done from both ends, not a vacuum poked into the wall. Here is the order we work in. Each step exists because of something that goes wrong when it is skipped, and each one is something you can ask any company whether they do.
- Run the dryer first and check for airflow at the outdoor termination, so you can see the difference yourself afterward.
- Pull the appliance forward and disconnect the transition duct. On a gas dryer the supply line stays connected, the machine is moved only as far as its existing connection safely allows, and the transition duct goes back on before the dryer is used again.
- Assess the run: material, diameter, how it is joined, where it goes, how it terminates, and roughly how much equivalent length it has once the fittings are counted.
- Brush and vacuum the duct through its full length, working with the airflow direction so debris is driven toward the outlet rather than packed against a bend, with vacuum capture at the appliance end to keep lint out of the room.
- Clean the termination itself: the hood, the damper blades and the space immediately behind them, where packed lint sits. An active bird or animal nest is a wildlife matter and gets referred out rather than removed.
- Check that the backdraft damper opens and closes freely, and point out any screen or grille fitted over the outlet. The code does not permit one.
- Reconnect the transition duct with clamps, not screws, and confirm it is a single length, not crushed, and not disappearing into the wall.
- Run the dryer again and confirm airflow at the hood.
- Report the defects found. Some are cleanable. Some are installation problems that need duct replacement or re-routing, which is separate work and separately quoted.
What affects the cost of dryer vent cleaning
Cost is driven by the duct, not the house: how long the run effectively is once its fittings are counted, how many turns it takes, whether it ends at a side wall or a roof cap, and whether any of it is reachable. We assess those on arrival and quote after seeing the run.
Two houses on the same street can be very different jobs. These are the factors that decide it.
- Equivalent length, not measured length. Fittings count against the allowance, so a duct that measures 20 feet on a tape can behave like 35.
- Number and type of elbows. A tight mitered 90-degree elbow spends several times the length allowance that a wide-radius smooth one does, and lint accumulates faster at the tighter turn.
- Termination type. A side-wall hood at chest height is a different job from a roof cap that needs height access and usually has more vertical duct behind it.
- Access. A duct running through a ceiling, a soffit chase, an attic or under a slab is reachable only from its two ends. Cleaning is the only maintenance lever available on a concealed run.
- Duct material and condition. Rigid metal cleans differently from semi-rigid. Plastic or foil accordion duct in a concealed run is a defect to be replaced, not cleaned.
- Termination hardware. A damper that no longer seals, or a screen or animal guard that should never have been fitted, changes what needs replacing, which is separate work and separately quoted.
- Stacked and closet installations. The transition duct behind a stacked unit is the classic crush point and often the whole problem.
- Condos with a shared riser. We can clean your branch and transition duct. The shared vertical shaft and its cleanout at the base belong to the building.
Dryer vent code rules that trip homeowners up
Most bad dryer vents were installed by someone who thought it was a simple pipe. Section M1502 of the Florida Building Code, Residential covers one- and two-family homes and townhouses; Section 504 of the Florida Mechanical Code covers most apartment and condominium buildings. The requirements are close but not identical, so cite the rule, not just the number.
The length limit is spent by turns. Under FBC-R M1502.4.5.1 the default cap is 35 feet of duct measured from the connection to the transition duct to the outlet terminal, and every fitting is deducted from that total using Table M1502.4.5.1. The transition duct behind the dryer is not counted against it.

Two tight 90-degree elbows spend 10 of the 35 feet, leaving 25 feet of straight duct. Four of them leave 15. The same turn made with a wide-radius smooth elbow spends about a third as much of the allowance, which is why so many runs are over length without anybody adding a single foot of pipe.
The rest of the rules that get broken, all from the same code sections:
- Screws at the joints. FBC-R M1502.4.2 states that ducts shall not be joined with screws or similar fasteners, full stop. The Florida Mechanical Code and the model code are looser, prohibiting fasteners that protrude more than one-eighth of an inch into the duct. Every screw tip is a lint hook inside a pipe nobody can see. Whirlpool says the same and adds: no duct tape.
- Foil or plastic accordion duct in the wall. Under M1502.4.3 the transition duct must be a single length, listed and labeled to UL 2158A, no more than 8 feet long, and never concealed within construction. Two lengths taped together is a defect even if both are listed.
- Joints assembled backward. M1502.4.2 requires the insert end of the duct to extend into the adjoining duct or fitting in the direction of airflow, so the male end of each section points away from the dryer. Reversed, every joint presents a lip into the airstream, and it is invisible once drywalled.
- A screen at the outlet. M1502.3 states that screens shall not be installed at the duct termination. Bird screens are sold everywhere and are the single most common clog point.
- An undersized or obstructed cap. M1502.3.1 requires the terminal passageway to be undiminished in size, with an open area of not less than 12.5 square inches. Many louvered caps and every 2.5-inch cap fail this, and the dryer never announces it.
- Terminating too close to an opening. Where the dryer manufacturer does not specify a location, M1502.3 requires the duct to terminate not less than 3 feet in any direction from openings into the building, including openings in ventilated soffits. Terminating beside a soffit vent looks tidy from the ground and dumps roughly a gallon of water per load back into the roof.
- Venting into an attic, soffit, crawl space or wall cavity. M1502.2 requires the dryer exhaust system to be independent of all other systems and to convey the moisture to the outdoors. No tying the bathroom fan into it, and no discharging into the structure. GE adds that the exhaust must never terminate into a chimney.
- A booster fan. These are two different products and the code treats them differently. M1502.4.8 prohibits domestic booster fans in dryer exhaust systems outright. A dryer exhaust duct power ventilator listed to UL 705 is a different, listed device, permitted under M1502.4.4, and where one is used M1502.4.5.3 makes its own instructions set the maximum duct length. Note that GE does not approve either type on its dryers, so the manufacturer's instructions can rule one out even where the code allows it.
- No length tag. M1502.4.6 requires that where the equivalent length exceeds 35 feet, that length be identified on a permanent label or tag within 6 feet of the exhaust duct connection. Almost nobody has one, so almost nobody knows their run is over.
- Replacing the dryer and going over length. Side-exhaust and bottom-exhaust models have a turn inside the cabinet, and Whirlpool and Maytag instruct you to add one 90-degree turn to the chart. A run that was compliant can fail simply because a new machine was delivered.
Under M1502.4.5.2, where the dryer manufacturer's installation instructions specify a size and maximum length, those instructions govern, and the code official is entitled to a copy at the concealment inspection. Manufacturers count fittings differently from the code, so never treat a single manufacturer number as the universal limit. What is different about dryer vents in Florida
Florida has one code-level difference from the model code that matters here: dryer exhaust duct may be 4-inch nominal Schedule 40 PVC where it runs horizontally beneath a concrete slab. Florida also prohibits joining residential dryer duct with screws outright, where the model code only limits how far a screw may protrude.
Read the PVC limits carefully, because they are narrow. FBC-R M1502.4.1 requires metal duct and then adds the exception: exhaust ducts may be 4 inches nominal in diameter Schedule 40 PVC when horizontally run beneath the slab. Schedule 40 only, 4-inch nominal, horizontal, and beneath the slab. PVC in a wall, an attic or a vertical run is not permitted, and the exception does not appear in the Florida Mechanical Code, which still requires metal for apartment and condominium buildings. The current edition is the 2023 Florida Building Code, Residential, 8th Edition, effective December 31, 2023.
Why it is worth knowing: NAHB's analysis of the Census Bureau's Survey of Construction found that 85.7 percent of new single-family homes in the South Atlantic division, which includes Florida, were built on slabs in 2024. An under-slab duct cannot be shortened, re-routed or replaced without breaking concrete. Cleaning is the only maintenance lever there is, and any low spot in that run will hold water.
On humidity, the mechanism worth knowing is the one the U.S. Fire Administration describes, and it is about the duct rather than the climate: if a vent is too long or has many bends and turns, moisture in the warm air passing through it condenses on the vent surfaces, attracting lint, until the accumulation creates resistance. Long, bendy runs are exactly what you get when the laundry is in an interior closet rather than against an exterior wall.
The Florida-specific part is what happens between cycles. A backdraft damper that no longer seals leaves the duct standing open to outdoor air, and the EPA advises keeping indoor relative humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent. A damper that closes is the simplest part of the whole system to get right, and it is checked on every visit.

How do I know if my dryer vent is clogged?
The most reliable sign is drying time: clothes coming out warm but damp, or needing a second cycle. Back it up with the outdoor test. Start a load, go outside, and check that the flap opens fully and air is moving strongly at the hood. Weak or no airflow at a running dryer means the duct is obstructed.
Why does my dryer take two cycles to dry one load?
Because drying is evaporation, and evaporation only continues if the water vapor leaves the drum. Whirlpool lists three requirements for drying clothes, heat, tumbling and airflow, and says airflow may be the most important of them. A restricted duct recirculates humid air instead of exhausting it. Rule out an under-spun wash load first.
How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?
At least once a year, according to NFPA, the U.S. Fire Administration, CSIA, NADCA, GE and LG. Samsung says once or twice a year; Whirlpool and Maytag say every one to two years. All of them add the same override: do it sooner if clothes are taking longer than normal to dry.
Can I clean the dryer vent myself?
Partly, and NFPA explicitly allows for it. A homeowner can scrub the lint screen, clear the transition duct behind the machine, and vacuum what is reachable from each end. What you cannot do without equipment is clean the concealed middle of a long run, a roof termination, or a duct under a slab, and those are where blockages actually build.
Does cleaning the lint filter mean the vent is clean?
No. The USFA states that while much of the lint is trapped by the dryer's filter, lint is also carried through the vent system along with moist air. Every manufacturer lists filter cleaning and vent cleaning as two separate tasks, on completely different schedules: every load versus once a year.
How much does dryer vent cleaning cost?
It depends on the duct, so we quote after seeing it. What moves it is equivalent length once the fittings are counted, the number and type of elbows, whether the vent ends at a side wall or a roof cap, and how much of the run can be reached. Two homes on one street can differ.
How long can a dryer vent be?
The Florida residential code default is 35 feet of equivalent length from the transition-duct connection to the outlet, with every fitting deducted. A tight 90-degree elbow counts as 5 feet, a 45 counts as 2 feet 6 inches. Where the dryer manufacturer's instructions specify a different maximum, those instructions govern instead.
Can I use the flexible foil duct behind my dryer?
Only as a transition duct, and only within limits: a single length, listed and labeled to UL 2158A, no more than 8 feet, never concealed inside a wall, ceiling or floor. GE goes further and requires rigid or flexible metal ducting, with rigid preferred and foil allowed only under strict criteria.
Is it safe to keep using the dryer if I think the vent is blocked?
No. Stop using it until it is cleared. CPSC's testing showed that with the vent obstructed, internal temperatures rose above normal and clothes did not dry, and the machine gave no warning other than ineffective drying while its electrical components became thermally stressed. There is no alarm for this condition.
Can a clogged dryer vent cause carbon monoxide poisoning?
Be careful with this claim. GE states that gas venting lengths have nothing to do with carbon monoxide issues. The defensible version is narrower: a gas dryer must exhaust outdoors, and it should never be run with the vent disconnected or discharging indoors.
There is a screen over my vent hood to keep birds out. Is that a problem?
Yes. Florida code M1502.3 states that screens shall not be installed at the duct termination, and the USFA warns specifically against wire screen or cloth because they collect lint and clog the vent. If animals are getting in, the answer is a proper hood with a working backdraft damper, not a mesh over the outlet.
My dryer vent runs under the concrete slab. What can be done?
Cleaning, mainly. Florida's residential code permits 4-inch Schedule 40 PVC where it runs horizontally beneath a slab, so these runs are legitimate. But they cannot be shortened, re-routed or replaced without breaking concrete, they are smooth-walled rather than metal, and any low spot will hold water. They earn their annual clean more than most.
I live in a condo. Whose job is the duct?
Yours ends at the riser. You can maintain your transition duct and the branch from your unit. The shared vertical shaft and its cleanout, which the Florida Mechanical Code requires on every vertical riser, are building maintenance. In a shared system a perfectly clean branch can still be starved by a fouled riser, which is worth raising with the association.
Would a booster fan fix a long run?
No. Florida code M1502.4.8 prohibits domestic booster fans in dryer exhaust systems. The compliant route for a long run is a dryer exhaust duct power ventilator listed to UL 705, installed per its own instructions, which then set the maximum length. Check your dryer's instructions too, since GE does not approve either device.
I have a ventless or heat-pump dryer. Do I need this?
No. Listed and labeled condensing or ductless dryers are the code's own exception to the requirement that dryers exhaust outdoors, and they have no exhaust duct to clean. They still need their filters and condenser maintained on the manufacturer's schedule. If you are unsure which type you have, check whether a duct leaves the back of the machine.
What should I ask a dryer vent cleaning company near me?
Ask whether they clean the full length from both ends or only the accessible part, whether they check airflow at the outdoor hood before and after, whether they clear and test the termination and its backdraft damper, and whether they will tell you what they found wrong with the installation itself.

A chimney sweep is the mechanical removal of creosote, soot, ash and obstructions from a chimney flue, firebox, smoke chamber and appliance connector, using brushes sized to the flue and vacuum containment to keep debris out of the room. NFPA 211 Section 14.2 requires that chimneys, fireplaces and vents be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits and correct clearances; sweeping is performed when that inspection finds deposits. The Chimney Safety Institute of America sets the practical trigger at one-eighth inch of buildup in a masonry flue, and sooner if glazed creosote is present. At what point does a chimney actually need to be swept?
CSIA recommends sweeping an open masonry fireplace when 1/8 inch of sooty buildup has developed, and sooner if any glaze is present in the system. One eighth of an inch is considered enough deposit to fuel a damaging chimney fire, and glazed creosote is highly flammable and should be addressed without waiting. The threshold is different for factory-built fireplaces, which CSIA says should be swept when any appreciable buildup occurs, because the deposits are acidic and attack prefabricated components. How does Florida's humidity affect a chimney?
Every county in Florida carries a warm-humid designation under Table R301.1 of the Florida Building Code, Energy Conservation, and Broward, Collier, Hendry, Lee, Miami-Dade, Monroe and Palm Beach counties are Climate Zone 1A, the hottest and most humid zone in the continental United States, with the rest of the state in Zone 2A. Sustained high humidity keeps masonry damp, feeds mold and mildew inside a cold unused flue, and keeps steel components wet enough to corrode without any rain event. It also means the classic northern failure mode, freeze-thaw spalling, is largely absent here. How often does a chimney need to be swept?
NFPA 211 Section 14.2 requires that chimneys, fireplaces and vents be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits and correct clearances. Sweeping itself is condition-driven rather than calendar-driven: CSIA sets the trigger at one-eighth inch of buildup in a masonry flue and at any appreciable buildup in a factory-built fireplace. A fireplace burning several cords a season may reach that threshold in a single winter, while one used a handful of evenings a year may take several. The annual inspection interval does not change either way, because it is looking for water damage, corrosion, obstructions and clearance problems as much as for creosote. Is a chimney sweep the same as a chimney inspection?
No. NFPA 211 Chapter 15 governs inspection of existing chimneys, and Table 15.2.1 selects one of three levels based on circumstances. A Level I inspection accompanies annual inspection and routine cleaning and covers readily accessible areas and freedom from obstruction and combustible deposits. Level II adds enclosed flues, accessible attics, crawl spaces and basements, clearances from combustibles, and an internal scan; the standard requires it on sale or transfer of the property, after a chimney fire or damaging weather event, before relining, and when an appliance of dissimilar type, input rating or efficiency is connected. Do gas fireplaces and gas water heaters need their chimneys checked?
International Fuel Gas Code Section 503.5.6 requires that before an existing appliance is replaced or a vent connector is attached, the chimney passageway be examined to confirm it is clear and free of obstructions, and cleaned if it previously vented a solid or liquid fuel appliance or a fireplace. Section 501.15.2 requires the flue liner to be continuous and free of cracks, gaps, perforations or deterioration that would let combustion products or moisture escape. Gas produces no creosote, but it produces acidic condensate, and Section 501.15.1 requires resizing where needed to control that condensation. Do chimneys in Florida really need sweeping and inspection?
The Florida Residential Code adopts the 2021 International Residential Code with amendments and carries the same chimney provisions at R1003 through R1005, including the cap and spark-arrestor requirements. Light seasonal use means creosote accumulates slowly, but the annual inspection still applies because the dominant failure modes in a warm, humid, coastal climate are wind-driven rain through an open or cracked crown, corrosion of metal components, animal nesting and storm damage to caps and chase covers. Separately, Florida Statutes Section 553.885 requires a carbon monoxide alarm within 10 feet of each sleeping room in buildings constructed on or after July 1, 2008 that contain a fossil-fuel appliance, fireplace or attached garage. What happens if a chimney is never swept?
From 2017 to 2019 the U.S. Fire Administration recorded an annual average of 34,200 heating fires in residential buildings, causing roughly 165 deaths, 600 injuries and $367 million in property loss each year. Fires confined to a chimney or flue accounted for 49 percent of all residential building heating fires in that period, the single largest category. Beyond fire, an unswept flue loses draft as its cross-section narrows, which pushes smoke and combustion products back into the room, and hidden liner deterioration allows those gases to reach framing and living space.
