Why Gas Fireplace Service Matters for Florida Homes
Gas fireplaces in Florida sit idle for most of the year — and that stretch of dormancy is exactly what causes problems. From late spring through early fall, a gas fireplace sees almost no use while the home around it deals with humidity levels that regularly top 80 percent. Moisture works into the burner assembly, corrodes the thermocouple and thermopile leads, and leaves mineral deposits inside the pilot tube. When a homeowner finally turns the unit on in November or December, the ignition system that worked fine last February may now refuse to light at all.
Coastal Florida adds a layer that inland homes don't face: salt air. Homes within a few miles of the Gulf or Atlantic deal with airborne salt particles that accelerate corrosion on gas valves, control wiring terminals, and the metal components around the firebox opening. A unit that looks fine from the outside can have a gas valve that's binding internally or a thermocouple that reads weak because its tip has oxidized. Annual service catches this before it becomes a safety issue rather than just an inconvenience.
Florida's storm season also plays a role that most homeowners overlook. Heavy rain and wind-driven moisture can push water into direct-vent termination caps on the exterior wall, and summer lightning activity can send voltage surges through the gas valve's electronic ignition module. A fireplace that stopped working after a storm — or one that hasn't been checked since the last hurricane season — deserves a proper inspection of the ignition board, wiring, and gas pressure before it's used again.
Common Gas Fireplace Problems We See in Florida
Because Florida's gas fireplaces are used lightly and then left alone for months, the failure patterns we see here are different from what a cold-climate technician encounters. Problems tend to come from inactivity and moisture rather than heavy wear. Understanding what's actually going wrong helps you know why each part of a service call matters.
Here are the issues that show up most often when we service gas fireplaces and inserts across Florida.
- Pilot won't stay lit after several attempts — Almost always a weak thermocouple or thermopile that has corroded during the off-season. The tip generates a small millivolt signal that tells the gas valve it's safe to stay open; once that signal drops below threshold, the valve closes. Cleaning or replacing the sensor fixes it.
- Electronic ignition clicks but the burner never catches — The igniter electrode tip accumulates a film of oxidation when unused for months. If the spark gap is also slightly out of spec from any vibration during storm season, the arc won't jump reliably to the burner. We clean the electrode, check the gap, and test the ignition module.
- Burner flames are yellow-orange instead of blue — Indicates incomplete combustion, usually from a partially blocked burner port, a dirty orifice, or air-shutter settings that drifted. In Florida's humidity, spider webs and fine debris inside the burner tube are a surprisingly common culprit. Correct flame color matters for both efficiency and carbon monoxide production.
- Gas valve unresponsive or slow to open — Salt-air corrosion on the valve's electrical terminals and, in older units, internal valve sticking from long periods without cycling. A valve that takes 30-plus seconds to open or fails to open at all needs to be tested for proper millivolt draw and replaced if it's out of spec.
- Exterior vent cap blocked or damaged — Direct-vent fireplaces exhaust combustion gases through a cap on the exterior wall or roof. Insect nests (especially mud daubers and wasps, which are active year-round in Florida) and storm debris can partially block the cap, causing incomplete combustion or triggering the unit's safety shutoff. We inspect and clear the termination on every service call.
- Control board failure after a power surge — Lightning and power fluctuations during storm season can damage the low-voltage ignition board inside the unit. The symptom is usually a fireplace that is completely unresponsive even though the gas supply is confirmed on. Board replacement is straightforward once the root cause is confirmed.
